In medieval times Norwich was one of the greatest cities in England.
Remarkably well preserved, its ancient buildings and City Wall remains
make it the most complete medieval city in Britain.
The City is dominated by two magnificent historic buildings its
Norman Cathedral and its 900 year-old Castle.
With a spire second only in height to Salisburys, Norwich Cathedral
is stunning. Its 1200 carved stone roof bosses illustrate the entire bible
story; the Cloisters are the biggest in England, above which is found
the Cathedral library, which houses 7000 rare books including some of
the earliest printed in England.
Norwich Castle has stood since the 12th Century. Subject to
a major refurbishment in 2000/2001, it houses a magnificent art collection
as well as a fascinating historical museum.
Within its jumble of medieval streets lie 1500 historic buildings, including
the largest medieval city hall outside London, and more pre-reformation
churches than any other city in Europe.
